Borough High St
The building that inspired this design was constructed during the mid-19th century on the site of the famous Marshalsea Prison. The prison was known for almost 500 years as the place where London's debtors were imprisoned, including Charles Dickens' father in 1824. The oldest wallpaper features a Gothic scroll design with influences from Moorish art. This wallpaper was the first to decorate the walls of one of the buildings that replaced the prison in the late 1870s.
