Darwin

Darwin (ca. 1760) is one of the Whitworth Art Gallery's most important documents. This remarkable English work has a fascinating history and was discovered intact in a house in Aix-en-Provence, France. The exotic scene is a precise replica of a typical 18th century hand-painted Chinese wallpaper. However, the tax stamp on the back of the original paper wallpaper clearly shows its English origin. The colors in the “Serein” color combination were very authentically transferred to the original.
