Tented Stripes
This classic 19th century stripe pattern was originally found on fabrics and was able to be produced on a larger scale through the natural development of the early trough method mentioned at Broad Stripe. It gets its name from the Regency fashion of hanging fabrics in a room to create a tent effect. The proportion of elements within these strips was typically fairly uniform, but the scale at which they were reproduced (and used) varied widely. The design often existed as a standalone stripe pattern, but later became popular as a background in a variety of larger overprint designs, including French damask.
