New Bond Street
The model was a fragment of an embossed leather wall hanging, dating from a time when wallpaper was still unknown. It is one of the oldest surviving documents held by English Heritage's wallpaper archive. Panels of embossed and painted leather, usually decorated with floral motifs, were popular, if very expensive, wall decorations in the late 16th and 17th centuries. The panels were sewn together to form large decorative wall hangings, in the same way you hang panels of wallpaper next to each other to create an impressive effect.
